The Work Continues

Today we celebrate the life and work of Rev. Henry Highland Garnet who faced many struggles, including enslavement on his journey as a faith leader. He served as pastor of Shiloh Presbyterian Church in New York City, Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church, Washington D.C., as president of Avery College, a co-ed school for free people of color, and later as the pastor of Grace Memorial Presbyterian Church, both in Pittsburgh. His speech to Congress on February 12, 1865, is considered to be one of the important speeches in African American history. Continue reading The Work Continues

Today we celebrate the life and work of Ruling Elder Katherine Johnson – a woman, as the story said, who basically rewrote the rules (or ignored them) both in her workplace AND in her church where she served as a member of the Finance Committee and as Treasurer at a time when women were not welcomed into those roles.  We give thanks for her example among us.
